Glossary of Medical Terms
Aneurysm
A blood filled, balloon-like bulge in the wall of a blood vessel.
AVM
Arteriovenous Malformation - an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins in the brain or spine.
Computer tomography (CT)
A scanning tool that combines x-ray with a computer to produce detailed images of the brain.
Haemorrhage
Bleeding, which within the brain is usually referred to as cerebral haemorrhage. It can be caused by a variety of factors, such as trauma, aneurysms, AVMs, or hypertension.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
A scanning tool which uses magnetic fields to capture a three-dimensional image of the brain.
Pial Arteriovenous Malformation
An arteriovenous malformation of the brain supplied by brain arteries. It usually presents in childhood.
Stereotactic Radiosurgery
A method of delivering highly focused radiation to a tumour or vascular abnormality, which gradually causes it to shrink.
Vein of Galen Malformation
An arteriovenous malformation deep within the brain which usually presents in newborn babies or young children.
